Sunlight only favors those branches that strive to grow upward

Last winter, this branch was weighed down heavily by a snowstorm; come spring, it failed to regain an upright position and remained extended horizontally. As spring arrived and new shoots emerged, the upward-facing parts thrived, while those growing in other directions withered and died away.
